Canary Wharf Muslim Association [WharfMA] presents:

CHAPTER 17 - SURAH AL-ISRA  (NIGHT JOURNEY)

with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad*

Date: Tuesday 20th December 2011
Time: 6pm - 9pm
Venue: Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place,
Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB

Juz 15 of the Qur’an begins with Surah al-Isra, the 17th
Chapter of the Qur’an. This is so named after a reference
to the Prophet’s miraculous ‘Night Journey’ (al-Isra)
from Makkah to Jerusalem. The Surah is also commonly
known as Surah Bani Israil there is warning given to
sections of the Children of Israil for not following
God’s guidance.

The Surah contains a series of commands and hence can be
seen as the equivalent of the ‘Ten Commandments’ (17:23-39).
In verse 9 of the Surah we are told: “This Qur’an guides to
that which is most upright and give good news to the believers
that they shall have a great reward” (17:9). There are frequent
references to the Quran in this Surah in different contexts
and this chapter is complimentary in many ways to
the next chapter Surah al-Kahf (18).

In this session of the monthly Journey Through the
Qur’an series, we will examine the history, structure
and guidance provided in this Surah and the
contemporary relevance.
