with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad*

Date: Tuesday 25th October 2011
Time: 6pm - 9pm

Surah al-Hijr (The Rocky Tract) is named after the mention of
this name in verse 80 where reference is made to the ancient
Arabian People of Thamud to whom Prophet Salih was sent. This
Sürah was revealed at about the same time as that of the
previous Sürah Ibrãhïm, which was during the last period
of the Prophet’s residence at Makkah.

The Surah begins by saying that a time will come when the
unbelievers will wish that they were Muslims.  The story
of Adam is repeated in this Surah.  We are also told of
the angels who simultaneously gave good news to Abraham
of a son as well as their mission to destroy the people
of Lot.

In this session of the monthly Journey Through the
Qur’an series, we will examine the history, structure
and guidance provided in this Surah and the
contemporary relevance.
