Canary Wharf Muslim Association [WharfMA] presents:

CHAPTER 10: SURAH YUNUS (JONAH)

with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad*

Date: Tuesday 24th May 2011
Time: 6pm - 9pm
Venue: Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place,
Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB

Surah Yunus (Jonah) is the 10th Chapter of the Qur’an and it is the first
of six Surahs of the Qur’an that is named after Prophets.  Although this
Chapter is named ‘Jonah’, surprisingly there is nothing whatsoever mentioned
about that Prophet in this Surah.  In fact, the Surah is named after a
reference to the ‘People of Jonah’ (Qawm Yunus) at the end of the Surah (v.98).

The People of Jonah was the only nation which was saved from Divine punishment
(unlike ‘Ad, Thamud and Pharoah) as they repented and corrected their ways
before the punishment fell uponl them.  Instead of the people, the Prophet
Jonah was punished by being swallowed by a big fish after he immaturely tried
to leave Ninevah without Divine instruction when his people did not heed to
his message.  He was saved by God for turning to Him with words of glorification
and repentance, as mentioned in Chapter 21.  In Chapter 37 we are told that
he was sent to over 100,000 people and if he did not glorify God, he would
have remained in the belly of the fish until the Day of Judgment.

This Surah provides a comparison and contrast between the story of Pharaoh on
one hand and the story of the People of Jonah on the other.  Both stories are
connected with ‘water’, both are threatened with Divine punishment and both
declare belief in God at the end.  However, due to the Divine Destiny or
Decree (Taqdeer) at play, Pharaoh’s belief is rejected and he is destroyed
whilst the People of Jonah’s beliefs are accepted and they are saved.  The
mystery can only be resolved by believing in Divine Decree and trusting
the Wisdom of the Creator as His decision is never unjust or arbitrary.
